UK MUST SUPPORT NUCLEAR BAN

Following the landmark introduction of the international Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons by the United Nations last month, supported by 85 countries, I asked the Secretary of State for Defence for an explanation as to why the UK Government continues to oppose this treaty and how this is consistent with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to work towards the eventual abolition of nuclear weapons.

The Defence Secretary’s claims of a commitment to disarmament rings hollow as the UK plans to spend tens of billions of pounds on the renewal of the existing nuclear weapons programme.

Nuclear weapons are immoral; their use in conflict risks the end of human civilisation on our planet. It is time the UK Government works with the international community to ban these weapons. I look forward to the day when an independent Scotland no longer has these weapons stationed in our country.
