The UK Government has shamefully scrapped its Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill, despite broad support across all political parties, including the SNP, purely to appease some of their own backbenchers.

Scotland’s huge progress on animal welfare is being held back by a UK Government too afraid of discontent on its own backbenches to even progress with its own manifesto commitments. As a result, the UK is no further forward in banning foie gras and animal fur imports, no further forward in banning live exports of animals for slaughter, and squandered an important opportunity to take vital measures designed to tackle puppy smuggling, prohibit the import of dogs with cropped ears, as well as banning the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening, and restricting the number of pets (dogs, cats and ferrets) imported on a non-commercial basis.

While Scotland stands as a beacon across the UK and Europe on animal rights, we remain shackled to a shrinking, lily-livered, husk of a Tory government which has lost its way and lost any semblance of moral authority on animal welfare.
