UK GOVERNMENT MUST URGENTLY LEGISLATE TO PROTECT ACCESS TO CASH
Access to cash is a vital lifeline for so many individuals and small businesses, particularly in rural and more disadvantaged communities. Even before the pandemic, free to use cash machines were disappearing from our high streets at an alarming rate following the exodus of our high street banks.
The pandemic has accelerated the move to a cashless society, with more shops no longer accepting cash payments.
I continued my campaign to protect access to cash by calling on the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government to lobby the Chancellor to legislate to introduce an obligation to ensure adequate access to free cash for the sake of our communities, our small businesses and high streets. Our Post Offices have a vital role to play delivering this.
It is vital that legislation to protect access to and use of cash is introduced as soon as possible in order to support our cash infrastructure on our high streets and prevent financial exclusion for the elderly and vulnerable.
