UK GOVERNMENT MUST URGENTLY DELIVER UKRAINIAN REFUGEE SETTLEMENT

The UK Government has dragged its feet on aiding Ukrainians fleeing war. While I welcome yesterday’s announcement that there will be no limit to the number of Ukrainian refugees who can come to the UK to live with host families under the Ukrainian refugee sponsorship scheme, I remain concerned about the barriers in place.

Due to Home Office guidance, none of the 3,000 plus spare rooms offered to Afghan refugees by UK hosts has been used. As the Government’s Homes for Ukraine site attracted more than 40,000 offers of accommodation in its first day, I challenged Michael Gove to ensure Home Office guidance facilitates rather than blocks Ukrainian refugees from settling here in the UK.
