UK GOVERNMENT MUST ESTABLISH PLAN FOR WORKER SHORTAGES

Shortages of workers in warehouses and food processing centres in the UK are having a real impact on the packaging and distribution of food to our supermarket shelves. As well as leading to empty shelves this also causes significant amount of food going to waste each week. This is exacerbated by the fact that there is an estimated shortage of 100,000 HGV drivers in the UK, a challenge which has been heightened by the UK’s departure from the EU leading to European HGV drivers to leaving the UK.

I asked the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what plans he has to address this unacceptable situation.
