UK GOVERNMENT EVADES RESPONSIBILITY AS WOMEN’S POVERTY IN RETIREMENT GROWS

In Westminster this week, I raised the scandal of an increasing number of female pensioners living in poverty.

It is unacceptable that in 2023, 20% of women live in poverty in retirement – a situation made worse by the fact that women born in the 1950s were robbed of their pensions.

The UK Government Minister not only dismissed these facts but suggests that the Scottish Government could address pensioner poverty when this is something that is explicitly forbidden in the Scotland Act 2016, Section 28, which states that no such support must not include “pensions assistance or assistance by reason of old age”.

However, the UK Government continues to peddle the myth that the impoverishment of older women is nothing to do with their regressive policies which hit pensioners – and women pensioners – particularly hard.
