TRAVEL INDUSTRY FACES ONGOING JOBS CRISIS

I challenged the Transport Secretary on the failure of the UK Government to provide additional support to the beleaguered travel sector. Until the return of free unrestricted travel, it is essential that the UK Government extends additional support available to the sector, as tens of thousands of jobs are still at risk.

I was disappointed with the Secretary of State’s repeated failure to recognise the need for additional support as the furlough scheme begins to be gradually withdrawn whilst travel restrictions continue. The travel sector, which has been hit hardest by the Covid -19 pandemic, has a long road to recovery ahead, yet the UK Government refuses to provide the promised sector specific support which is needed to safeguard this industry from potentially tens of thousands of further job losses.
