TORIES’ CRUEL UNIVERSAL CREDIT CUT EXPOSES THEIR BLEAK VISION FOR SOCIETY

I spoke in a debate on the Tories’ cruel plan to cut the Universal Credit uplift of £20 per week, which is set to affect 10,406 of my constituents in North Ayrshire and Arran, a constituency where one in three children already live in poverty.

This callous decision, the biggest welfare cut in the history of the Welfare State, exposes the kind of society the Tories wish to create, which I contrasted with the inclusive, compassionate society the majority of the people of Scotland wish to build.

The SNP Scottish Government is doing what it can to tackle the worst excesses of this UK Government, but it simply cannot mitigate every single cut imposed by Westminster.

Scotland has repeatedly rejected this UK Government but the only way to protect ourselves from a Westminster Government imposing its will on Scotland is to take our own future in our own hands.
