TIME FOR REST OF UK TO CATCH UP WITH SCOTLAND

Hunting with dogs continues unabated in England and Wales due to weakness in the Hunting Act and the use of ‘trail’ hunting as a smokescreen for illegal hunting.

With its nine exemptions and a loophole which enables hunts to claim that chasing and killing animals is accidental, the law is failing to protect animals from cruelty.

I met with the League Against Cruel Sports to discuss this following the compilation of 1,367 reported incidents of fox hunts wreaking havoc in the countryside or involved in suspected illegal hunting in England and Wales over the 2022/23 hunting season.

In January 2023, the Scottish Government passed the Hunting With Dogs (Scotland) Act to close loopholes in the law exploited by Scottish hunts. It also bans trail hunting, in recognition of its widespread use in England and Wales as a cover of illegal hunting.

It is time for the UK Government to finally act to put an end to this barbaric practice.
