The Tories stood on a key manifesto pledge in 2019 to guarantee that the basic state pension would rise by either 2.5 per cent, the rate of inflation or earnings growth, whichever was the highest ie to guarantee the Triple Lock on pensions.

From today, as UK inflation is rising at its fastest rate for 30 years, with fuel, energy and food costs surging, the state pension will rise by less than half the current inflation rate of 6 per cent. UK pension incomes are increasingly squeezed between rocketing energy and food prices Tory government which has abandoned them to hardship and poverty in their twilight years

Bizarrely, when I challenged him, the Prime Minister instead trumpeted the very Triple Lock which he has abandoned!
