THE GLOBAL RIGHT OF EDUCATION

I spoke in a debate marking the UN International Day of Education, which recognises the importance of education across the world. Unfortunately, Covid19 has had a huge impact on education globally, with 1.6 billion students facing disruption to their learning.

The UN agenda for sustainable development recognises the importance of education and must be delivered, particularly in addressing the barriers that girls too often face in accessing education in developing countries. There are so many benefits in increasing girls’ access to education, not just for themselves, but for the societies and countries in which they live.

The UK aid budget can play an important role in this, and we must commit to doing all we can to ensure the reach of education is truly global, so that every child can experience its transformative power.
