SOWNE OF ORGANE

Yesterday I attended a magnificent performance in a packed St Columba's Parish Church, Largs, by Sowne of Organe (Old Scots, Sound of Organs) which advocates for the preservation of historic organs, many of which are in churches.

The theme was ‘Masterpiece in Peril’ as the magnificent organ in St Columba’s, built by ‘Father’ Henry Willis and Sons in 1892 is at risk, due to the imminent closure of the church.

This organ has remained technically and tonally unaltered for 132 years.

Organists Chris Bragg, Andrew Forbes and Steven McIntyre of Sowne played a repertoire of music from Richard Wagner, Gerald Finzi, Herve Wilkins Albert Lister Peace and Leon Boellmann which displayed the incredible musical power, sensitivity and range of the St Columba’s organ and why it’s so important to preserve it, possibly in another location.
