SHOCKING UK GOVERNMENT COMPLACENCY ON BUILDING SAFETY
I led for the SNP in a debate on building safety, where I pointed out that four years on from the Grenfell tragedy, the UK Government’s support for those who have dangerous cladding on their buildings is woefully inadequate. The UK Government has allocated funding but has no work to establish the number of properties affected and the funding relates to cladding only, whilst no support is available to those in buildings with faulty fire cavity barriers or flammable balconies.
Meanwhile the Scottish Government is surveying all properties which are potentially affected to work out how best to ensure support is targeted to where it is most needed.
Whilst this problem is much more widespread in England than Scotland, the bill for remediation could be as high as £15b across the UK
The UK Government must finally step up and provide those affected with the support they need to fix this issue and get on with their lives and those involved in the construction of these buildings must be held responsible.
