SCOTTISH FISHING SECTOR LEFT IN LEGAL LIMBO
The recent announcement from the Home Office that a concession would not be provided for foreign crew working within 12 nautical miles in the fishing industry has caused chaos and resulted in many foreign nationals essentially being banned overnight from doing work within UK waters without a skilled worker visa. Many fishing boats and businesses have been left in limbo in ports, with crewmen being forced to stop working and some boats being unable to even go out to sea.
This announcement will have a knock-on effect on food production sectors as well as a devastating impact in Scotland, where a fifth of fishermen come from outside the European Economic Area and rely on transit visas to work.
I raised these concerns with the UK Government however it seems that Tories have no qualms about sacrificing the Scottish fishing industry.
