SCOTS’ PARLIAMENT FACES NEW THREAT TO ITS POWERS
The UK Government is set to scrap the Human Rights Act and replace it with a Bill of Rights in this parliamentary term.
Given that the Human Rights Act is embedded into the Scotland Act, I challenged the UK Government’s Secretary of State for Justice, Dominic Raab, to rule out changes to this Act without the consent of the devolved administrations.
This Tory Government has a track record of riding roughshod over the Sewell Convention, whereby legislation will “not normally” be introduced without devolved parliaments consent, which is a democratic outrage.
This does not bode well should Holyrood vote to withhold consent to the scrapping of this Act.
