I have been engaged in meetings about the planned closure to the above. The Post Office is owned by the UK Government so it is disappointing that the local press has covered this issue entirely without any reference to this important perspective.

Sadly, I can now report that Kilwinning Main Street Post Office will close on 14th January 2023 at 12:30 as a result of the closure of McColls, where it was situated.

As discussed with Mark Gibson, External Affairs Manager, Post Office Ltd, the Post Office is facing a particularly challenging period. The impact of rising costs, inflation and restrictions on funding from the UK Government, means that Post Office branches are under unprecedented pressure, despite in Kilwinning, as in so many places, working hard to provide many of the services our banks did before they abandoned our towns.

However, the Post Office is currently actively exploring alternative- options to retain Post Office services in Kilwinning Town Centre and I will do all I can to assist with that and am pressing the UK Government to do more to support our beleaguered Post Offices., which are an essential part of the social and economic infrastructure of our communities.

If you would like to have your say please email the Post Office National Consultation Team at

before 14th January. You can find more info by clicking the link

I will ensure updates on this issue will appear on this page as and when I have them.
