GENDER PENSION GAP SHOWS SCANDAL OF WOMEN CONDEMNED TO POVERTY IN RETIREMENT

In addition to the pension injustice inflicted on women born in the 1950s, too many women across the UK live with the harsh reality of a retirement of poverty and financial struggles. The gender pension gap is significantly larger than the gender pay gap. I once again raised the issue of the gender pensions gap, the difference in pension income between men and women. For a number of reasons, not least discriminatory pension rules such as institutional bias, in retired women are far more likely to be poorer than their male counterparts and more likely to be reliant on pension credit.

Urgent action is needed to address this issue, and I again called on the UK Government to bring an end to this injustice. A retirement of poverty and hardship is the reality for too many women across the UK and this, just like the robbing of WASPI women, must urgently be addressed.
