CONFUSION AND DITHERING FROM UK GOVERNMENT UNDERMINES PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGING

With the UK Government confirming the decision to press ahead with an end to all legal Covid19 restrictions in England on 19 July, I challenged the Secretary of State for Health, Sajid Javid, on the UK Government’s confusing messaging on face masks.

The UK Government has decided that masks will no longer be compulsory but that wearing them will be “expected”, while the Chancellor has boasted that he will stop wearing a mask next week. In contrast, the chief medical officer and the Chief Scientific Adviser have stated that they will continue to wear masks.

This mixed messaging fundamentally undermines public health and it is deeply disappointing that rather than answering my question, the Secretary of State decided to dodge responsibility in a slippery and evasive manner.
