CALL TO REMOVE VAT ON SUNSCREEN – MELANOMA AWARENESS MONTH

May is Melanoma Awareness Month and I took the opportunity to again raise the issue of VAT on sun cream with the UK Government.

According to Cancer Research UK, skin cancer rates have more than doubled in the last 30 years, and melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Protection from ultraviolet rays is vital in reducing the risk of developing this condition, and it is high time the Chancellor reclassified sun cream as an essential healthcare item, rather than a cosmetic product subject to VAT charges. Exempting sun cream from VAT would mean more people could afford to protect themselves from the risks of skin cancer.
