The UK Government recently announced plans to introduce voter ID, despite the evidence showing that voter fraud is incredibly rare. Instead, what this legislation seeks to do is suppress voting amongst groups less likely to vote Tory, with lower income groups, ethnic minorities and younger people most likely to be affected.

In contrast to this archaic and anti-democratic approach in Westminster, we see the SNP Scottish Government seeking to encourage voter turnout and extend the franchise, with 16 and 17 year olds, refugees and foreign nationals with leave to remain able to vote in Scottish Parliament elections and local elections in Scotland.

I therefore presented a Parliamentary Petition to the House of Commons, calling on the Government to scrap these archaic plans.
