TORIES’ INTERNAL MARKET BILL RIPS UP DEVOLUTION SETTLEMENT IN SCOTLAND

In the debate on the UK Internal Market Bill, I repeatedly highlighted this bill for what it is: an assault on the principles of devolution and the powers of the Scottish Parliament.

I pointed out that despite the Tories’ rhetoric, this bill undermines the Scottish Parliament’s ability to legislate in devolved areas and flatly denies the sovereignty of the Scottish people. It goes against the Sewel Convention, central to the Scotland Act 1998 which established the Scottish Parliament, which states that Westminster would not legislate on devolved matters in Scotland without the consent of the Scottish Parliament.

The Tories are simply ignoring the right of the Scottish people to make decisions for ourselves and choose our own priorities. The Tories have shown they cannot be trusted to serve Scotland well and deliver on promises to Scotland.
