UK GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO TRADE IN DEATH

I spoke out in Parliament against the UK arms trade with Saudi Arabia in a debate on the tragic situation in Yemen.

This medieval regime, which victimises many of its own citizens, has perpetrated an appalling massacre on the Yemeni people, and by continuing to sell arms to them, the UK Government is aiding and assisting war crimes. They are putting profit before the due and proper consideration for the sanctity of the lives of the Yemeni people in what is effectively a trade in death.

The sale of £5.4 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia completely undermines any effort by the UK to be an honest broker in this situation. It is time for the UK to stop the warm words, stop selling arms to this blood-soaked regime, and to stand up properly in practical terms against the slaughter of the Yemeni people.
