GOVERNMENT PERMITS EROSION OF EMPLOYEE RIGHTS

Following the dreadful treatment of employees of companies such as British Airways and Centrica, I support the Bill from my SNP colleague, Gavin Newlands MP, for the practice of ‘firing and re-hiring' to be rendered illegal. This appalling behaviour towards staff must not go unchecked. Employees must have legal protections against such exploitative practices.

Despite acknowledging the poor behaviour of British Airways and other companies, the UK Government remains opposed to the ‘Fire and Rehire’ Bill.

Eroding workers' rights, the end of furlough coinciding with the end of payment holidays, as well as an economy and jobs market suffering in the midst of a global recession presents a bleak outlook for workers in the UK, and the UK Government must step up to support the labour market at this difficult time.
