THE FUTURE OF HUNTERSTON B NUCLEAR POWER STATION

I recently presented a petition to the House of Commons on behalf of my constituents calling for the UK Government to work alongside the Scottish Government and North Ayrshire Council to support the transition of the local economy following the announced cessation of energy production at Hunterston B Nuclear Power Station in January 2022.

While there is no immediate threat to the jobs, there are approximately 520 staff and 250 contractors working on the site, and this is extremely important to the local economy. This site and its skilled workforce represent an opportunity to deliver clean sustainable energy production, and it is important that the UK Government works with the Scottish Government and North Ayrshire Council to ensure the necessary investment is delivered as soon as possible, helping to protect the local economy and our environment.
