TORIES RUSH HEADLONG TOWARDS NO DEAL BREXIT AND POWER GRAB ON SCOTLAND’S PARLIAMENT
Despite the economic havoc wrought by Covid19, the UK Government is continuing with plans to end the Brexit transition period at the end of the year, regardless of whether the UK is in the midst of a second wave of infections, which remains a real possibility. Alongside this Scotland faces the prospect of a power grab on the Scottish Parliament where the establishment of an unelected body will be able to veto Scottish legislation in the name of the “UK internal market”.
The Government knows there is not enough time to unwind the UK from the EU or to negotiate important trade deals, meaning the UK is headed for a no-deal Brexit. This decision is madness, supported only by an ideological obsession from the Tory party, who will have Brexit at any cost, regardless of the damage it will do to the economy, jobs and living standards.
This is not something that Scotland voted for, we have repeatedly rejected it, yet it is set to be forced on us nonetheless. The UK Government's response to these objections is to set up an unelected body with the power to veto Scottish Parliament legislation, regardless of the wishes of the Scottish electorate. Clearly, the Government’s philosophy is: if they cannot win elections in the constituent parts of the UK, they simply seek to dismantle the institutions that they cannot control. This attempted power grab to undermine the Scot’s Parliament is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to the people of Scotland.
