UK GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO COMMIT FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR FUTURE LOCAL LOCKDOWNS

Following the recent announcement that Leicester will enter a local lockdown, I sought assurances from the UK Government that, as furlough support is reduced from 01st August, local lockdowns will need to have full financial support reintroduced to ensure public compliance.

Public compliance is essential for lockdowns to be effective, however people will find it extremely difficult to comply with any future local lockdowns if full furlough support at 80% of their salary is not in place. The UK Government’s furlough scheme has been essential in supporting people to stay at home during the nationwide lockdown.

However it is not yet clear if full will still be in place for areas that are affected by local lockdowns after 01st August, and the UK Government must clarify this.
