POSTMASTERS MUST HAVE ANSWERS ON THE POST OFFICE HORIZON SCANDAL

On behalf of the SNP I once again called on the UK Government to launch a full independent public inquiry into the Post Office Horizon scandal, which saw issues in the post office network’s software lead to sub-postmasters being wrongly convicted and imprisoned for false-accounting and theft. This scandal saw many postmasters lose their livelihoods, their homes, their reputations, and their mental health.

It has been six months since judges found major issues in relation to secrecy in the post office, specifically in relation to horizon, and whilst the inquiry by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee is welcome, we need a full independent public enquiry that the Prime Minister told the House would be established in February. The Minister for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy rejected these calls which is not a sustainable position on such a serious matter.

Postmasters have waited too long for justice and have already gone through so much, and we cannot wait any longer for answers into one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in the history of the United Kingdom.
