BLACK LIVES MATTER

Many of us have watched the protests in the United States following the death of George Floyd. I have been inundated with emails from constituents who are deeply concerned about racial inequality in the US and have been prompted to reflect on such inequality in our own society.

Peaceful protest is a human right, and some of the scenes we have witnessed are truly shocking and have no place in a healthy democracy. There must be no escalation of tensions and the UK Government must use all means at its disposal to work for a de-escalation in tensions in the UK and across the US.

I presented a petition in the Commons, calling for the UK Government to immediately suspend the sale of riot equipment to the United States of America and make representations to President Trump to seek a de-escalation of tensions.
