UNITED NATIONS WARNS OF FAMINE OF "BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS"
During virtual Questions to the Secretary of State for DFID - UK Department for International Development, I raised the United Nations' growing concerns of a humanitarian catastrophe in developing countries affected by the Coronavirus pandemic as a famine of “biblical proportions” is feared potentially affecting 250 million people worldwide.
Whilst the humanitarian aid outlined by the Secretary of State is welcome, I was disappointed with the lack of detail and her failure to mention hunger. The coronavirus is a deadly disease, but by preventing people from working and by interrupting already fragile food supply chains, it could have an even more deadly effect on impoverished countries. We must do our part to stop this growing catastrophe.
