ANIMAL WELFARE MUST BE PROTECTED POST-BREXIT

I took part in a debate yesterday on animal sentience, where I pointed out many of the positive steps taken by the Scottish Government in this area. I also called on the UK Government to maintain EU standards as a minimum as it negotiates new trade deals post-Brexit. This is an issue of great importance to many of my constituents.

Animal sentience is a self-evident truth. Of course animals feel pain, pleasure, distress and fear, and it is important that we enshrine this truth in law. There is concern over the effect Brexit will have on animal welfare standards, particularly as the UK seeks trade deals with countries like the United States, where their standards are much lower. I called on the UK Government to address the concerns of many in the country and commit to maintaining EU standards as a minimum.
