Citizens Advice Scotland is launching a major new campaign - Council Tax: Check to Save.

With Council Tax debt now the biggest debt issue about which it is contacted, it is encouraging people to check if they are entitled to exemptions, reductions or discounts on their Council Tax.

In Scotland, for example, last year the Scottish National Party (SNP) The Scottish Government supported 471,790 households with its Council Tax Reduction Scheme for low income households.

The average Council Tax debt is over £3,000 - almost three times the average bill.

Whilst the Tories abolished Council Tax Benefit in 2012, the SNP Government introduced the Council Tax Reduction Scheme, to ensure low income households could access support to pay their council tax
