UK BUDGET MUST SCRAP VAT FOR E-PUBLICATIONS AND AUDIO BOOKS

March 6, 2020

To celebrate World Book Day 2020 and the joy of reading, I called on the Leader of the House to support zero VAT rating for digital and audio books, in the forthcoming budget, to bring them in line with print publications since it has a disproportionate impact on those with disabilities.

Printed books and newspapers have been exempt from VAT since 1970 in recognition of the fact that a tax on such an essential skill is unacceptable. E-publications and audio books must be accorded equal parity given digital publications play such a significant role in the lives of those who live with sight and learning difficulties.

In addition, research from the National Literacy Trust has found that 1 in 5 children and young people now read books online.

I am disappointed the Leader of the House refused to support this measure, but I will continue to call on the UK Government to scrap this barrier to learning.

Watch the exchange below.
