PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS
On a debate on the persecution of Christians worldwide, I recently called on the UK Government to synchronize its words and actions so that real influence can be exerted on regimes that persecute Christians.
I pointed out that if the UK Government takes this matter seriously, regimes such as Turkey, which has been criticised by Open Doors UK for presiding over appalling discrimination and persecution of Christians, and their leader President Erdogan, should not have been given the red-carpet, state visit treatment by the UK. However, as the UK searches for a trade deals with Turkey, the sharp deterioration of human rights in recent years is extremely alarming and must not be ignored.
I also added that if the UK Government thinks the persecution of Christians is an issue it wishes to address, then it should practice a more open and compassionate approach to refugees who are fleeing religious persecution.
