US CONGRESS COULD VETO UK-US TRADE DEAL
The UK Government is keen to diverge from EU standards and regulations, despite the effect this could have on Northern Ireland, which shares a land border with the European Union. Both Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress have said they will never ratify any trade deal which infringes upon the Good Friday agreement. I asked the Foreign Secretary to explain how he plans to resolve this situation.
Despite his confidence that this situation has been resolved, concerns remain that the UK Government’s plan to diverge from EU rules is incompatible with any free trade agreement with the EU, therefore threatening trade both with the EU and the US, the world’s two largest markets.
