SCOTLAND’S DEMOCRATIC RIGHT TO CHOOSE HER OWN FUTURE IGNORED BY TORIES

Last night I led a debate on the Claim of Right for Scotland, the principle which recognises the people of Scotland have the sovereign right to decide how they are governed. We have seen this principle come under repeated attack in recent times, as a Brexit that Scotland’s people did not vote for is imposed upon us without our democratic consent, and with a Prime Minister who totally ignores the sovereign will of the Scottish people to have the right to choose their own future.

This is a Right was first set out in the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, that in Scotland, the people are sovereign and was most recently endorsed by the House of Commons in July 2018. This Right is now under attack like never before as the UK Government has shown huge disrespect to the devolution settlement and the democratic will of the people of Scotland.

The response from the Tories entirely and deliberately ignored the fact that the people of Scotland have voted for the right to choose their own future
