LABOUR IN SCOTLAND “HUMILIATED" OVER TRIDENT U-TURN: BRANCH OFFICE TOLD TO BACK NUCLEAR WEAPONS

Labour in Scotland has been further humiliated after the party was called out for backing UK Labour’s pro-Trident position, despite having passed a policy at their conference against the renewal of the nuclear weapons system.

On STV's Scotland Tonight, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard was accused of “hypocrisy” after his party opted to reject their own position in Scotland and instead support wasting billions of pounds on renewing Trident.

Patricia Gibson, SNP candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran said:

“Labour’s branch office status in Scotland has been cemented by this craven U-turn. They have been left utterly humiliated by failing to oppose the immoral nuclear weapons system on the Clyde.

“Rather than abiding by their own policy opposing Trident renewal, Labour in Scotland has capitulated and fallen into line with their Westminster bosses to accept wasting billions of bounds on renewing weapons of mass destruction.

"Only the SNP can be trusted to stand by our consistent and long-standing opposition to Trident. At this election, only a vote for the SNP is a vote to escape the chaos of the Westminster parties and to put Scotland’s future into Scotland’s hands.”
