PMQ RESPONSE FROM FOREIGN SECRETARY SHOWS UK GOVERNMENT’S UNWILLINGNESS TO OBEY THE LAW
The Prime Minister was not present for Prime Minister’s Questions today as he was attending the Tory Party Conference.
Instead, Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab took the questions.
I asked him to set out the circumstances under which the Prime Minister would be willing to write to the EU Council as set out in the terms of the Benn Act, passed by Parliament.
This Act compels the Prime Minister to seek an extension of Article 50 by writing to the EU Council if he does not have a Brexit deal by 19th October. Failure to do so will be a breach of the law.
The Foreign Secretary appeared to suggest that, if necessary, the Prime Minister will breach the law as he will not seek an extension of Article 50. So there we have it – a Prime Minister who thinks the law does not apply to him despite being caught on the wrong side of the law last week by the UK Supreme Court and the Scottish Supreme Court.
