Patricia Gibson MP has criticised the Lib Dems for preparing to again work with the Tories in an attempt to ensure the SNP doesn’t have a “clean sweep” of Scottish seats in a snap general election.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) MP for North Ayrshire and Arran has pointed out that the Lib Dems simply can’t be trusted, after it was reported that talks were “ongoing” between the Tories and Lib Dems in an attempt to block an SNP landslide, despite the Lib Dem Leader previously calling for anti-Brexit parties to work together.
The Lib Dems have now ruled out working with the SNP, leading political commentators to question their commitment to stopping Brexit.
Commenting, Mrs Gibson said:
“The Lib Dems are showing their true colours by preparing to jump right back into bed with their old Tory Coalition chums in a desperate attempt to stop the SNP gaining traction at a general election.
“Actions speak louder than words. The Lib Dems would apparently rather team-up with Boris Johnson than work with the SNP to stop Brexit.
“The Lib Dems have sold out their principles before and their current Leader, Jo Swinson MP, was a minister in the 2010-2015 UK Coalition Government, voting repeatedly against her party’s own manifesto in exchange for a ministerial post. Clearly, given the chance, she’ll do exactly the same again.
“People in Scotland have been dealing with the consequences of the last Tory Lib Dem partnership for nearly a decade now, with policies like the Bedroom Tax and cuts to social security and impacting upon the most vulnerable in our society.
“The Lib Dems have learnt nothing from their time working with the Tories. However, voters in Scotland haven’t forgotten, especially here in Ayrshire, when only two years ago the Lib Dems could not find a single candidate to contest the 94 council seats in East, North and South Ayrshire.
“Only the SNP can be trusted to stand up for Scotland and will stand up for Scotland.”
