Recently in parliament I participated in an Autism Awareness Training Session. I was able to learn more about autism and at the end of the session was presented with an Understanding Autism certificate by the National Autistic Society. This session coincided with ten years since the passing of the Autism Act which sought to meet the needs of those living with Autism. But there is still more to do in raising understanding and awareness of this condition, which is why the Scottish Government continues to ensure this Act remains fit for purpose. This is important as the National Autistic Society Scotland estimates that around 58,000 people in Scotland live with autism, with around one in five of these thought to be over 60. There are fears that this "invisible generation" living with this condition are too often misdiagnosed or misunderstood, as it is often associated with children. Clearly we all need to learn more about this condition.
