LIB DEMS RULE OUT DEAL WITH SNP BUT NOT TORIES
Patricia Gibson MP has slammed the Lib Dems for ruling out working with the SNP but not the Tories.
Despite their leader, Jo Swinson MP, saying last month that her party needed to work with people who want to stop Brexit, Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmichael confirmed on BBC Radio 5 Live that his party wouldn’t work with the Scottish National Party (SNP).
In an interview with The Herald in July, Ms Swinson, a former Tory-Lib Dem Coalition Government Minister, refused to rule out a deal with the Tories, saying "I have not said never in any future scenario".
The Lib Dem coalition with the Tories saw them break manifesto commitments and vote for a litany of damaging policies, including the Bedroom Tax, benefits freeze, cuts to council tax support, scrapping the Education Maintenance Allowance in England and the trebling of university tuition fees in England to £9,000.
Commenting, Patricia Gibson MP said:
“The Lib Dems simply cannot be trusted. They completely rule out working with us but keep the door open to another disastrous coalition with the pro-Brexit Tories.
"Many people across Scotland and the UK are still suffering the consequences of the damaging cuts made by the Lib Dems the last time they did a backroom deal with the Tories - pushing families into poverty, depressing living standards and increasing inequality.
"This latest admission makes clear the Lib Dems have learnt nothing from their time in coalition with the Tories and would do it all over again. Only the SNP can be trusted to stand up for Scotland."
