I REMIND NEW PRIME MINISTER THAT SCOTLAND’S PEOPLE ARE SOVEREIGN

During the first Commons statement by our new Prime Minister, I challenged Boris Johnson over his recent statements on a second independence referendum for Scotland.

The PM, voted into power by 90,000 Tory Party members, has refused to rule out blocking a second referendum, even if the SNP win yet another mandate for one at the next Scottish Parliament election. All this despite there already being a pro-independence majority of both Scottish MPs and MSPs.

We already have a mandate, and the elevation of Boris Johnson to the position of PM only strengthens our case. The right of the people of Scotland to determine our own future is a basic democratic principle that must be respected.
