UK GOVERNMENT MINISTER SHOCKED BY THE CRUELTY OF HIS OWN GOVERNMENT
I recently raised with the Leader of the House the shocking case of a constituent of mine who lost their entitlement to Personal Independence Payment (PIP). My constituent had been given a 10-year award of PIP, before they suffered a heart attack. When they were released from hospital, they notified the Department for Work and Pensions of this heart attack, which resulted in a reassessment where they lost their entitlement. Fortunately, I was able to help have this decision overturned. However this situation, which has caused much unnecessary distress to my constituent, should never have occurred in the first place.
Whilst shocking, this is by no means an isolated case, with many of my constituents and others throughout the country experiencing similarly cruel and unjust decisions. I therefore called on the Leader of the House to support an urgent review into the PIP system so that improvements can be made. Whilst he was clearly shocked by this case, I was disappointed that he did not commit his Government to action.
