SEVERE DISABILITY PREMIUM – UK GOVERNMENT MUST MAKE PAYMENTS TO THOSE WHO HAVE LOST OUT

The High Court recently ruled that the UK Government’s Universal Credit System unlawfully discriminates against those with severe disabilities. Universal Credit does not provide any additional payments for those with severe disabilities, meaning those who formerly received the Severe Disability Premium and have moved onto Universal Credit, often because they have moved address, will lose out on thousands of pounds a year.

I asked the Department for Work and Pensions when it plans to contact those who have lost out on support due to this policy, and urged the Minister to ensure that no burden is placed on claimants applying for back payments of the premium. I have a number of constituents who have been adversely affected by this policy and I will continue to pressure the Government to implement compensatory payments as soon as possible.
