GOVERNMENT MUST ACT TO STRENGTHEN ELECTORAL LAW
I recently asked the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission Committee, Bridget Phillipson, on her views on the effectiveness of electoral law. I highlighted recent instances where electoral law has been broken, such as the Leave campaign in the EU referendum, and the Tories in Scotland’s £100,000 Dark Money donation in the weeks before the 2016 Scottish Parliament election. Fines imposed are derisory and will not deter those minded to cheat. I therefore asked if she agreed that the penalties for breaking electoral law must be urgently reviewed to ensure that they are fit for purpose.
