UK GOVERNMENT MUST KEEP FREE TV LICENSES FOR OVER-75s

I recently spoke in a debate on Free TV Licenses for Over-75s, an issue I have repeatedly raised as the UK Government plans to abdicate responsibility for this benefit by placing it in the hands of the BBC.

I pointed out that the BBC is a broadcaster; public welfare is not its remit and so should not have to decide whether to continue this support for pensioners.

Around 9000 of my constituents in North Ayrshire and Arran receive free TV licences, which is vital in tackling pensioner poverty as well as isolation and loneliness.

This is a cowardly move from the UK Government who are rolling back on a manifesto pledge and continue to attack older people, following their decision to scrap Pension Credit for mixed-age couples, and their continuing denial of the rightful pensions of the WASPI women.

I urged the Government to support our older people and stop these attacks on their living standards.
