CLYDESDALE BANK CLOSURE
Hours after the Clydesdale Bank announced its latest branch closure in Largs, in my constituency, I raised this on the floor of the House of Commons. This is a worrying trend in North Ayrshire over the last few years, as we have seen banks stampeding out of our towns, leading to increasing concerns about financial exclusion, and all the implications that that poses for consumers, small businesses and the future of our high streets.
I called on the UK Government to have a debate on the social responsibility of banks, and for a proper investigation into banking hubs for every community. This is an issue I have actively campaigned on in the past, leading a debate last year on the RBS bank closures in North Ayrshire. Earlier last week I also met with Treasury Minister John Glen MP last week, calling for banking hubs for all our towns.
The UK Government stood idly by last year when our communities were abandoned by taxpayer-owned RBS. Enough is enough.
