CHALLENGING UK GOVERNMENT’S FOODBANK SHAME
I recently raised the issue of increased foodbank use in my constituency with the Leader of the House, an issue on which this Government has a shameful record. Largs foodbank has experienced a significantly increased usage since November 2018, a situation all too common across Scotland and the U.K. In one of the richest countries in the world it is scandalous that so many people cannot even afford to put food on their table, due to a welfare system that is not fit for purpose alongside shocking rates of in-work poverty.
I was disappointed that in her response the Leader of the House failed to recognise that Universal Credit is driving people to use foodbanks and needs urgent reform to stop more people from going hungry.
