UK GOVERNMENT MUST REFORM WORK CAPABILITY ASSESSMENTS

I again spoke in a debate on Work Capability Assessments, an issue I have repeatedly spoken out about since I was first elected. I know all too well how these assessments damage people by the harrowing tales I have been told by many of my constituents.

I highlighted concerns about the lack of expertise that assessors have when conducting assessments, and how reports often do not accurately reflect the claimant's conditions. I also highlighted how claimants can be subject to invasive and inappropriate questions.

Using private companies in this process is totally unacceptable, as it commodifies our most vulnerable citizens. There is a shockingly high level of successful appeals against benefit decision which shows just how the system does not work and the DWP continue to get decisions wrong.
