FIRE SAFETY AND SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

I recently spoke in a debate on fire safety and sprinkler systems, an issue that, as we have seen in the case of the Grenfell tragedy, can mean the difference between life and death. I pointed out that following the tragedy, the Scottish Government has acted to ensure that sprinkler installation is mandatory in flatted accommodations, large multi-occupancy dwellings and places that deliver care. This is important as sprinklers reduce the risk of fatalities in fires, and they are not expensive to be added to buildings.

The Grenfell fire was a tragedy, and it highlighted much about fire safety as well as the type of society we should aim to build. Every single person should be entitled to the same high levels of fire safety protection, in their homes, schools, hospitals and workplaces.

Action must be taken so we do not witness another tragedy like Grenfell, and myself and Members across the House urged the Minister to act to bring standards in England up to the levels seen in Scotland and Wales, as people across the UK deserve the same level of protection no matter where they live.
