COMMEMORATION SERVICE - HIROSHIMA & NAGASAKI

Yesterday on the Isle of Arran I had the honour of addressing the commemoration service at Lamlash Parish Church to commemorate the huge numbers killed and injured when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August respectively in 1945.

It was great to have an opportunity to catch up with Scottish National Party (SNP) stalwarts such as Anne Bruce, John Bruce and Margaret Gray.

This event was organised by John Page and Isle of Arran CND, and began with an address from Rev Lily McKinnon, with Janet Fenton, Vice-Chair of Scottish CND also addressing the gathering , as well as David Mackenzie from Nukewatch UK.

The vast majority of people in Scotland oppose the very concept of nuclear weapons, yet the dominant parties in Westminster are fully committed to spending around £207 billion on a new generation of these weapons which continue to be housed on the Clyde, against the wishes of the vast majority of the people of Scotland.

These weapons do not make us or the world a safer place and it is important that all nations sign up to the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

During this service, as we reflected on the horror that weapons of mass destruction can inflict, which the world witnessed in 1945, we can all play our part by ensuring we continue to oppose and condemn nuclear weapons which are an affront to all that is decent.
